Beginning in 2022, use of Ride With GPS software will be the preferred method of navigation during a ride.  Alternatively, maps and text directions (cue sheets) are posted on the Cycling web page (click on 2022 Weekly Route Maps).  Riders who wish to use the maps or text will need to print or copy from the website.  Beginning May 11, 2022, OSC will no longer provide paper copies of maps or directions.

    • Free starter version can be downloaded to your iPhone or Android phone
    • Library of all OSC rides can be accessed from your phone; OSC pays an annual fee to make these routes available to members (no cost to you).
    • Before starting your ride, select your ride from the library.  A map appears on your screen, with your route highlighted.  As you ride along, your current position, and your progress on the route, are displayed on the map.
    • Audio (a spoken voice) is provided as you approach, and when you reach, a turn in the route.
    • When you complete the ride, you can save your ride in your own library.
    • Ride With GPS can also be used on your own personal rides.  When you start navigation, your current position and the route you have followed appear on the map. When your ride is completed, your route can be saved to your library.
    • Your library then contains all the OSC rides that you have completed, and all your own rides.  For each ride in your library, you can view a map showing your route, and view summary statistics (distance, time, climbing elevation, average and maximum speed, etc.).
    • In place of the free Starter version, basic and premium versions of the software have additional features but require a monthly or annual fee.
    • Requirements for using Ride With GPS: must have a smartphone (iPhone or Android) and must have a mount which attaches your phone to bike handlebars or stem (many choices for under $15).
    • You can access your library and other personal info on the Ride With GPS website on your computer.

The Cycle Committee provides the following information to help run our cycle events as smoothly as possible and keep everyone safe, please read:

    Rider Responsibilities and Safety Info

    • Be sure to sign in for all rides, and sign out as well when you return (or, if you’re going directly home, please inform the Ride Leader so they won’t look for you).    Our Ride Leaders are volunteers; please respect their time by signing out after the ride.
    • A helmet is required on all club rides (no helmet, no ride, no exceptions). A bright headlight and rear tail light are recommended.
    • Be prepared. Bring adequate water or sports drink. Use sunscreen if needed.
    • Riders are expected to comply with all traffic laws and customs on all club rides.
    • Use hand signals to tell motorists and other cyclists what you intend to do (right turn, left turn, stop)

    • Point to any road hazards you are passing to help riders behind you (i.e. rough road conditions, pot holes, loose gravel, sticks or debris in the road or shoulders).  Also, call out “car back” to help be sure other riders are aware.
    • If possible, have tools for mechanical mishaps (spare tube or patch kit, tire pump & tool)
    • Wear bright clothing so motorists can easily see you. A helmet mirror or handle bar mirror is also useful for added safety.
    • Only pass other riders on the Left and announce this to the rider(s) you are passing. Passing on the right is unexpected by the rider in front and very dangerous for both riders.
    • Ride single file as far to the right as possible or as road conditions allow. Be aware of any sharp drop-offs on the shoulders. If you do ride along side another rider, only do so when there is no traffic coming from behind and keep a continuous view behind for approaching traffic.
    • New riders should speak to the ride leader about navigation during the first OSC ride.  For subsequent rides, navigation is the responsibility of the rider using (1) Ride With GPS software, or (2) maps and directions printed or copied from the web site by the rider.
