The Cycle Committee provides the following information to help run our cycle events as smoothly as possible and keep everyone safe, please read:

Rider Responsibilities and Safety Info

  • Be sure to sign in for all rides, and sign out as well when you return (or, if you’re going directly home, please inform the Ride Leader so they won’t look for you).    Our Ride Leaders are volunteers; please respect their time by signing out after the ride.
  • A helmet is required on all club rides (no helmet, no ride, no exceptions). A bright headlight and rear tail light are recommended.
  • Be prepared. Bring adequate water or sports drink. Use sunscreen if needed.
  • Riders are expected to comply with all traffic laws and customs on all club rides.
  • Use hand signals to tell motorists and other cyclists what you intend to do (right turn, left turn, stop)

  • Point to any road hazards you are passing to help riders behind you (i.e. rough road conditions, pot holes, loose gravel, sticks or debris in the road or shoulders).  Also, call out “car back” to help be sure other riders are aware.
  • If possible, have tools for mechanical mishaps (spare tube or patch kit, tire pump & tool)
  • Wear bright clothing so motorists can easily see you. A helmet mirror or handle bar mirror is also useful for added safety.
  • Only pass other riders on the Left and announce this to the rider(s) you are passing. Passing on the right is unexpected by the rider in front and very dangerous for both riders.
  • Ride single file as far to the right as possible or as road conditions allow. Be aware of any sharp drop-offs on the shoulders. If you do ride along side another rider, only do so when there is no traffic coming from behind and keep a continuous view behind for approaching traffic.
  • New riders should speak to the ride leader about navigation during the first OSC ride.  For subsequent rides, navigation is the responsibility of the rider using (1) Ride With GPS software, or (2) maps and directions printed or copied from the web site by the rider.
