Hike at the Lime Hollow Nature Center, southwest of Cortland, where there is some fascinating geology, the result of the last glacier’s retreat. (Hiking along the trails looking at the "kame and kettle features" with an occasional "bog and marl pond" made me go to the web searching for details on how these uncommon elements were formed.)

We’ll meet at 2:30p at the --> Lime Hollow Visitor's Center  at 338 McLean Road, Cortland, 13045.

  • The best way to get there from the Syracuse area is to get onto Rt. 281 in Homer, then head south.
  • After passing a Fairfield Inn on your right, you’ll see the Pall Trinity manufacturing buildings, also on your right.
  • Immediately after Pall Trinity is a traffic light at McLean Road. Turn right and follow McLean Road a little more than 2 miles to the Lime Hollow Nature Center main parking lot on your left. (It’s about 0.2 miles past the intersection with Lime Hollow Road on the left).

Notice that we’re starting later than usual and that’s to avoid the traffic associated with the day programs with the local schools and a congested parking lot. Sunset on February 9th isn’t until almost 5:30p and that should give us plenty of time to explore the area.

Please be sure to register for the hike so we can control the number of cars in the parking lot and can keep you posted on details. They have dedicated cross-country ski trails but we’ll suggest using hiking boots, microspikes, or snowshoes depending on the weather and I’ll keep you updated both on the forum and by email.
