Onondaga Ski Club
A Club For All Seasons
NOTE: Date change
On Friday, November 18th we’ll hike the Finger Lakes Trail on the southeast side of Greek Peak, starting at 1:30. That way, when we come down, we’ll be able to go to Trax for either an afternoon snack or an early dinner.
This hike is interesting! It starts by crossing a usually-dry creek bed, then goes uphill steadily for an elevation gain of about 900 feet. Along the way we’ll parallel a very steep creek bed, pass by an old steam tractor boiler, and travel under a set of power-lines that have a view to the southeast. Then we’ll go a little farther into Kennedy State Forest and have a view over the Greek Peak ski area to the north. (The hike is steep in places and it might not be the view that takes your breath away.)
The trail is a bit rocky with the typical woodland roots. We’ll stop occasionally on the way up because it is a fair amount of work, and there are a few muddy spots near the top.
To get to the trailhead, start at the Greek Peak ski area and drive east on Rt 392 for about a mile to Tone Road. (This is the road that leads to Greek’s Lift 5 and there will be a Finger Lakes Trail sign on Rt 393.) Drive to the end of the road, a little over ½ mile, to the parking area. It is a small parking lot and carpooling is suggested.
