  • Back to the Skaneateles Conservation Area
  • The past couple of times that we’ve hiked at the Skaneateles Conservation area we’ve started at the Guppy Falls parking lot.  But this time, we’ll start at 11 o’clock from the O’Laughlin parking lot, about 0.2 miles from Old Seneca Turnpike.
  • See map of area. Skaneateles Conservation Area
  • The original plan was that we’d take trail AO across the creek and up the hill, but that’s impossible, a result of Mother Nature and the local beavers. There used to be a bridge across the creek and the remains are interesting to look at.  The beavers incorporated the bridge supports in their dam and the force of the water has moved a good part of the bridge downstream!
  • So, what we’ll do is take trail AO to the now-destroyed bridge, then hike across private property on the Private Connector trail, passing a much smaller beaver dam.  Then we’ll take a rickety bridge on trail B1 across the creek, go up B1 and B5, and then do a loop in the Federal Farm trails.
  • On the lower trails it’s likely to be muddy and there are a lot of roots, so boots and hiking poles are recommended.
  • We should be done about 1:00p or so, and that’s a great time to go to Skaneateles for lunch.
