Camillus Forest Hike – Thursday, February 8th

  • We’ve hiked the Camillus Forest Unique Area before and the primary reason for choosing this hike is that we should have a nice view overlooking the city on a relatively mild February day.
  • The total distance will be about four miles and we’ll take the perimeter trails except for a short detour onto a portion of Trail 7.  (See the map.)
  • These trails go through wooded areas where there are some fairly steep and slippery areas, and there will likely be some very muddy sections, but I hope a couple of dry days will make it better than it was today.
  • The total distance is about four miles and there is an easier “escape route” about half way through.
  • Please get there by 10:50 so we can get organized.

To get to the Camillus Forest Unique Area,

  • From the city side, head toward Auburn, then get off at the Rt. 173 exit.  Follow Rt. 173 (Warners Road) west. go past the Erie Canal and Reed Webster Park, cross Nine Mile Creek and then make a left turn on Thompson Road.  (It’s about 1.9 miles from Rt. 5 and if you go up a hill you’ve gone too far.) About 1000 feet down Thompson Road is a parking lot on the right.
  • From the west side – Get off at the Milton Avenue/Township 5 exit. Turn left then turn left at the traffic light at Bennet Road (Knowell Road).  Go to the end of Bennet Road where it intersects with Rt. 173.  Turn left onto Rt. 173, cross Nine Mile Creek and then make a left turn on Thompson Road.  (It’s about 0.8 miles from Rt. 5 and if you go up a hill you’ve gone too far.) About 1000 feet down Thompson Road is a parking lot on the right.
