April 9th is your chance to take a walk in the woods and, before the leaves come out, get a good view of some spectacular local geology.

From the DEC website “Clark Reservation State Park is a geologic wonder of the last ice age and a botanist's paradise. The park's natural features include rugged cliffs and rocky outcrops, woodland and meadow, a wetland and a glacial plunge basin lake in which the surface waters and bottom waters do not mix.”

We’ll meet in the Clark Reservation public parking lot at 10:15 and start hiking at 10:30 AM. The plan is that we’ll take the Mildred Faust trail, then continue on the Long Trail and the Long Trail Extension to the Powerline Trail. We’ll come back into the reservation at the Pulpit Rock Trail and follow that to the Long Trail, where we’ll take a brief detour to a Cliff Trail overlook. Then we’ll turn back on the Long Trail and take the Switchback Trail to the Dry Lake Trail and back to the parking lot.

The total distance will be only about 2.5 miles, but your knees will get a workout. Most of the hike is on woodland paths but there are some extremely rocky areas, and we strongly recommend good boots and a hiking pole.

With the many smooth rocks, any surface moisture will present a slipping hazard and the hike will be rescheduled if the ground is wet.
