The fall book discussion will take place on Zoom on Thursday, November 18, 7:00 pm -8:30 pm. Register on the website calendar by clicking on the event date to get a link for the discussion. The book will be The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See. There is plenty of availability in the Onondaga County Central Libraries.
It is a historical novel set in Korea from WW II through the Korean War. The story follows the friendship of two women against the background of Korean culture, politics, and history. Especially interesting is that the women are "haenyeo," women divers who lived on the island of Jeju and were the economic mainstay of their families.

As you can see from the Amazon reviews (https://www.amazon.com/Island-Sea-Women-Novel/product-reviews/1501154869), this book has been highly praised by readers. The descriptions of the culture, the role of women, the sea diving, the relationships of the women, and the political situation in Korea are all fascinating. But I do want to warn you that there is one scene, about 2/3 of the way through the book, that contains graphic violence. This scene involves the 4.3 Uprising and Massacre that began in Jeju on April 3, 1948. This is an incident that those of us in the western world know little or nothing about. I do think it's important to honor those victims by acknowledging that this did happen, but be prepared that it will be difficult to read and you many want to skim some of that chapter.
